An Ode to Tuscany

The community of Tuscany is one of the special communities in Calgary. It is unique in that it was one of the first master planned neighbourhoods.  You can still feel the detail and intention: the embrace of nature and lots of parks and green space for kids to play, the awesome pathway system, the quiet cul-de-sacs and the thoughtful mix of housing from apartments, townhouses, villas, single family homes of various home sizes and the awesome age 50+ complex of the Sierra’s of Tuscany that keeps many grandparents close to their grandkids.

Our commercial areas keep things convenient and the Tuscany Club, run by the Tuscany Residents Association, is central for so many activities. It lights up every winter to the wonder and smiles of those young and young at heart. The LRT allows for easier access for many to the city, university and shops along the way.

It’s not perfect, but there’s something really special here. Thousands of kids can walk to our schools or ride their bikes. The massive bike racks at Twelve Mile Coulee School spill over every year. The views are spectacular and if you go for a wander on the pathways you will see so many others walking, biking, running and enjoying the amazing pathways system and natural park space of Twelve Mile Coulee natural environment park.   There are probably more dogs and pets here than most other communities as well as our resident wild visitors such as the moose, deer, bobcats and that porcupine or two you hear about every once in a while.

As the community has grown there have been many people behind the scenes of various volunteer organizations which have helped shape our community. Some of our local playgrounds were funded by fundraising efforts started by local parents, thousands of kids have grown up through the soccer program run by the TCA, new friends made through the adult slowpitch tournaments, and many other sports supported by local sporting groups.(Welcome to Calgary Youth Ultimate and huge thank you to the Bowridge Little League Baseball Association for the recent baseball diamond upgrades.) Volunteers assist the Tuscany Club with many events and programs. TCA volunteers hosted the Harvest Festival and Colour Run and many youth programs were imaged and hosted by the Tuscany Youth Council. This year we are losing some of these programs because there are not volunteers to run them.

So I invite you to comment and post the things you love about our community on the TCA Facebook page. Share your favourite memory or the reason you live here. Encourage each other to keep more of what makes it special. Negative comments please leave for all the other posts. This one is about the good stuff.

I’ve been posting these updates over the last couple of years. My term ends in May. If you’d like to continue the Ode to Tuscany and want to be involved in community engagement, help plan events, work with the Tuscany Youth or are interested in writing updates for this page please contact executiveadmin@tuscanyca.org

See you on the walking paths.

Cheers,
Monika
